The impact of regular gynecological exams on women’s health

January 17, 2020

As women, we tend to put the needs of others before ourselves. However, to continue caring for others, we need to prioritize ourselves, including our reproductive health. To properly care for yourself, you need to go to regular gynecological exams. Doing so has a great impact on your health.

Our reproductive health needs change as we age. Gynecological exams do not just involve checking for signs of problems, they also involve reproductive health education. The impact of regular gynecological exams on women’s health cannot be overstated.

What You Can Get From Regular Gynecological Visits

In a gynecological exam, the gynecologist examines the abdomen, vagina, cervix, and uterus. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, women should have their first visit to the gynecologist at the age of 13, when they first get their period. The first visit typically focuses on educating the young woman on her cycle, reproductive health, and sexual health.

Your gynecological needs will change as you get older. A gynecologist is specialized in supporting your needs no matter what they are. For instance, teenagers could benefit from sexual health information, such as the use of contraceptives to avoid pregnancy and how to be safe from sexually transmitted diseases. Young adults can benefit from fertility information and help on how to start a family. A gynecologist can help pregnant women with prenatal and post-natal care. Women who have had children can receive family planning advice from their gynecologist. Lastly, a gynecologist can offer support and guidance to menopausal women as they exit the reproductive years of their life.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women see their gynecologist at least once a year for those who are considered low-risk and are in good health. For women who are experiencing gynecological issues, more frequent visits are recommended. A regular visit to the gynecologist is preventive in nature. The visit will include a breast cancer screening, bone disease screening, sexually transmitted disease screening, and a discussion on any unusual symptoms you may be experiencing. If the doctor sees anything suspicious during the appointment, you may be recommended to do further testing. Your gynecologist will coordinate and work closely with other specialists during treatment if you ever need it for a gynecological issue.

A gynecologist tailors services according to your unique needs throughout life. Women who pay regular visits to their gynecologist find it easier to be proactive about their reproductive health, which benefits their overall health.
