What is a Sonohysterogram?

June 12, 2020

A sonohysterogram is an ultrasound of the uterus. It is a diagnostic procedure typically recommended to patients who have symptoms of abnormal uterine growths, endometriosis, or uterine cancer. For instance, if you experience abnormal bleeding, debilitating pain during menstruation, bloating, having difficulty conceiving, or suffered miscarriages, a sonohysterogram may help determine if there is an issue with your uterus.

A sonohysterogram can reveal uterine fibroids, polyps, masses, and lesions that often signal a serious health condition. If you are scheduled for the procedure, here’s what you can expect from it.

Producing Images of Your Uterus

A sonohysterogram produces images of the uterus using sound waves and the returning echoes. It requires an injection of a saline solution into the uterus and the use of a transducer, which is inserted through the vagina to reach the uterus. The technician moves the transducer around to examine the uterus and check for abnormalities. The images are produced in real-time on a video display screen to which the transducer is attached. The technician will proceed to take pictures of the uterus for a radiologist and gynecologist to examine. The saline solution injected into the uterus will drain out after the procedure.

The procedure is very much like a gynecological exam, and involves no pain, anesthesia, and radiation exposure. At most, you will feel a bit of discomfort, but this will be as much as you would feel in a normal gynecological exam. Some women report experiencing cramping during and after the procedure. Your technician try to make the experience as comfortable as possible for you.

A sonohysterogram can produce more detailed pictures of soft tissues compared to an X-ray. It is recommended that the exam be performed a week after menstruation and is not recommended to women who are pregnant.

What A Sonohysterogram Can Detect

A sonohysterogram can detect many conditions affecting the uterus, including but not limited to the following:

  • Fibroids and polyps
  • Benign or malignant masses or tumors
  • Lesions
  • Scarring
  • Blood clots
  • Varicose veins
  • Aneurysms
  • Abnormal uterine shape

It’s normal to feel anxious before undergoing a diagnostic procedure. If you are feeling nervous about your sonohysterogram, let your doctor know. Your doctor can answer all your questions and provide you with enough details to keep you well-informed and relaxed. If you are still not comfortable with a sonohysterogram, you can discuss alternative diagnostic options with your doctor. However, keep in mind that a sonohysterogram is well-regarded as a safe and comfortable diagnostic procedure.
