Questions to ask your Gynecologist about Birth Control

November 24, 2017

Birth Control

If you’re thinking of starting birth control, or switching to a different form of birth control, it’s important to come to an expert with questions you’d like answered. The good news, is that there is a form of birth control that fits every lifestyle. You don’t want to take a pill every day? There’s an IUD you never have to think about. You don’t like the way the hormones make you feel? There are non-hormonal options. Let’s talk about questions!

Should I consider hormonal or non-hormonal birth control options?

Some people, for different medical reasons, don’t like the weight gain or other side effects from hormonal birth control pills and shots. While, yes, the hormones in birth control are the factors that shorten or lighten your period, some people prefer a more natural birth control like a diaphragm, or a ParaGard – a copper IUD.

Does my family history make a difference?

Your family history of blood clots or another disease could make a significant difference in choosing your birth control. Talk to your doctor, and definitely disclose any family medical history, even if you think it may not be relevant.

How long does a specific type of birth control last?

It really depends on how long you want to be protected against a potential pregnancy. If you see kids in your future down the line but want short-term protection, the pill might be for you. If you have decided to close up shop, an IUD can last up to 12 years. It really depends on your future plans.

How does an implant work?

Some fit into your uterus, and some can even be placed in your arm. Your gynecologist would be the best person to explain the procedures required for either, how long of a commitment it will be, and what you can expect.

How easy is it to switch between different types of birth control?

You may feel panicked by all the options out there, but fear not. Your gynecologist can talk you off the ledge when it feels like you have a big decision to make. Take comfort in the fact that some choices are less permanent than others, and like buying a car, you can shop around.
